What is a Wisdom Tooth?
Wisdom Teeth usually develop in young adults.
Wisdom teeth can present challenges because they can be very difficult to keep clean, can be painful, or there may not be enough room for them in the mouth and they’re therefore highly susceptible to tooth decay, infection, and gum disease.
About 65% of the population develop wisdom teeth between ages 12 and 15.
Wisdom teeth are actually called third molars. So why do people call them wisdom teeth? The third molars do not grow in until the dental arch becomes larger, which generally occurs around the age of 17-25, a time also referred to as the “age of wisdom.”
FACT
Wisdom teeth got their nickname from the age when they typically grow in.
How do we remove these wisdom teeth?
Removal of wisdom teeth is a surgical procedure and is often recommended to be done under local anesthesia, conscious sedation or general anesthesia, depending upon the patient’s choice of treatment and severity of the case.
